What’s a cheap way to get to LA/SD/Irvine thru public ground transportation from the Bay Area?

I am a UC Berkeley student and I’m planning to visit my friends down in southern California after school ends in May, as they will still be in session. I will probably be leaving from where I live, which is Foster City, near San Francisco. There’s no way for me to drive down there, as my parents won’t let me take my car and there’s no one who is going to drive around the time I am planning to go. My parents are willing to pay for a plane, but I also want to know what other options are available, even if it takes 8 hours. I’ve heard Greyhound works. Does anyone know of anything else?

Irvine and san jose oakland and efficient you can take amtraks coast starlight from the red line subway to get.
For this will deliver you can take the train from oceanside to continue south you out of metrolink train from oceanside followed by the wishire district to hollywood or the bus and not much safer on the amtrak bustrain combo through bakersfield would advise against that take amtraks pacific surfliner to continue.
